Compton’s President and Co-Chair Jakada Imani on How To Build Racial Equity Within an Organization

Compton Foundation Board President and Co-Chair, Jakada Imani, is also the CEO of The Management Center (TMC), which trains progressive leaders to run more equitable, sustainable, and results-driven organizations. In a recent interview with Lift Economy, Jakada talks about the important work TMC is doing to break leaders out of old leadership mindsets that can hold back social justice work.

It is a profoundly destabilizing time. And that means it’s a world that’s at play. When there’s a monolith, no matter what you do, it feels like nothing changes. That’s hard.

But when you’re in this moment where it’s just teetering and it’s just like, what the hell is going on? Well, that’s when you can say, “Oh, wait a minute. We could actually do something.” You know what I mean?

The metaphor I used this weekend is, it’s like a loose ball. And that is not settling, and it’s not fixed. And it’s not where you’re just like, “Well, I don’t know what we’re gonna be able to do, or if anything we’re doing matters.” No, actually. Right now you could imagine and see a path where you could actually create, and there’s the room to create.
