Article: Feminist Strategies for Fighting Militarism
In a new op-ed published by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, our director of programs Hanni Hanson joins Christine Ahn of Women Cross DMZ and Diana Duarte of MADRE to examine how feminist organizing offers effective strategies for countering growing militarism and protecting democracy.
The article, “To Fight Growing Militarism, Philanthropy Should Embrace a Feminist Playbook,” highlights how feminist activists worldwide have successfully combated autocracy—particularly in South Korea, where women-led protests achieved the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law.
As the authors note, feminist movements are “inclusive, nonhierarchical, optimistic, committed to justice, and deeply concerned with the impact of politics on people’s everyday lives.” These values directly counter authoritarian tendencies and provide a roadmap for philanthropic organizations concerned about democratic backsliding.
